---|---|
The Gumbo Pot- students bring in a recipe and we discuss what is the gumbo's origin. Students pick a particular ingredient that is grown in our state and conduct research on that commodity. They conclude with a poster of pictures and information on the particular ingredient. Letter writing, math, and technology is included in the entire project. As hands on, the students crushed their own sassafras leaves for file and wheat for flour. Workshop Session (all workshops will be one hour) | |

Jo Ann Hebert Valverda Elementary, AG in the Classroom 2256373562 Joann.Hebert@pcpsb.net I am a fourth grade teacher that tries to incorporate agriculture in the classroom. One way that was a huge success was the gumbo project. We shared wonderful stories from grandparents. What type of gumbo did they cook, what types of meat was in their gumbo, when did they cook gumbo, how was the gumbo cooked, did they use file, did they use flour? All of these questions stemmed from a simple recipe that the students brought from home. From the recipe, we conducted research on their particular ingredient and made class presentations. My students also received first hand experience when they crushed their own leaves for file and flour. Letters were written to local farmers for ELA. We studied maps to see where our crop was grown. |
