Pest management is an important component of agricultural production
and healthy living situations in the home. The activity is making a insect observation chamber to be placed outside and monitored. Students will learn about the agricultural pests around their homes, what attracts them then research how they can be controlled. This activity is part of a four-lesson unit. Participants will also receive a packet of fact sheets about invasive species that provides information and activities about the importance of being aware of pests. All lessons are aligned to Common Core State Content standards and Next Generation Science Standards. Workshop Session (all workshops will be one hour) | |

Suzanne Squires Los Olivos Elementary School/ CFAITC 805-688-5758 ssquires.losolivos@gmail.com Suzanne Squires is a 7/8 grade teacher at Los Olivos Elementary School in Los Olivos, California. She currently teaches science, agriculture, art, multimedia, and health and has been in the classroom for more than 19 years. Sue graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo with an animal science degree and pursued a career as a zookeeper. Educational outreach was always a passion and she often took animals and medflies into the classroom. Realizing that teaching was one of her strengths and passions, she pursued her teaching credential and was hired at Los Olivos Elementary School where she is able to weave agriculture into core science classes and electives. Sue incorporates hands-on experiences as much as she can so the students can see how important it is to understand the world around us. Teaching agriculture in the classroom provides many opportunities for that. |
Stephanie Etcheverria California Foundation for Agriculture in the Class 9165615625 Stephanie@LearnAboutAg.org Stephanie Etcheverria has been a program coordinator for California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom for six years. Stephanie works with teachers throughout California by exhibiting at conferences, presenting workshops, and sharing resources to pre-service teachers through university student teacher programs, to show educators how to incorporate materials about agriculture into their curriculum while meeting Common Core and Next Generation standards. She also coordinates the Imagine this… Story Writing Contest and has been the coordinator for San Francisco Farm Day and the California Agriculture in the Classroom Conference. |
