ABSTRACT INFORMATION
'Poultry in the Classroom'

I would like to demonstrate how my third graders grow laying hens from chicks to laying hens withing the school year. We order day old chicks in August and rise them to laying by the first of March. Students care for hens and gather eggs daily. Students are engaged in washing, weighing and grading, marketing, and selling classroom eggs. Topics will also include how to set up individual cages workstation time of 15 minutes per day. Also, many examples of how students get the real world connection to Common Core math units through our Cooking with Math workstation.

Mini-Workshop Session (activity should be easily demonstrated in 25 minutes and will be repeated 4 times on Friday)

Biosketch: I am a math, science and social studies teacher in Mississippi’s largest school district.  I was the 2014  Mississippi Ag in the Classroom Teacher of the Year, 2016 Desoto County Teacher of the Year, 2017 Fulbright Japan Scholar ESD Teacher Exchange Participant, and 2017 Mount Vernon Teacher Institute Participant.    My students run a farmers’ breakfast market.  They manage a full time school farm that includes livestock, row crops, kitchen gardens and flower gardens. Inside our classroom, we preserve garden produce and cook different dishes that provide real world application of math framework objectives.   Our special projects for this year include traveling to New York City to cook lunch with former White House Chef, Bill Yosses and traveling to George Washington’s Mount Vernon to re-establish rice cultivation in a historically authentic way. My students and I have been featured in magazines articles and television news stories about agriculture.
