'Special Education: Where Ag Education is the Solution'

Special Education students greatly benefit from hands-on learning that focuses on lifelong goals and instantly applicable skills, which is an integral part of agriculture education. This workshop will consist of analyzing methods for modifying and accommodating agriculture-based curriculum for Special Education students across various levels of difficulty. This workshop will use already-made Ag in the Classroom lessons as examples as well as dissect new lessons created just for students with special needs. It will also give samples of a variety of ages while concentrating mostly on how to adapt an age-appropriate agriculture-based curriculum to an appropriate skill level.

Biosketch: As a senior in the Special Education program at Vanderbilt University, I continually see the benefits of students with disabilities being influenced by agriculture. Special Education students, especially those with Autism, benefit from hands-on learning. Additionally, the majority of their curricula is centralized around learning life skills that are immediately applicable to their lives. Bringing Ag back into schools is instrumental to our society because it is so essential to a healthy, happy life. I have served at the TN Farm Bureau Office, and interned with University of Tennessee Extension's classroom programs. Additionally, I served as an intern at the TN Governor's Residence, where I developed an agriculture-based field trip curriculum. In a world where people think chickens have 4 legs, I relish the opportunity to share about Agriculture Education in Special Education and work with a community that has so drastically affected my life.
